Keukenhof in The Netherlands, also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world’s largest flower gardens! We went on a road trip to this amazing place to get some, long awaited, flower photos. It was of course packed with tourists because the main season just started, everyone was taking photos of all the different gardens and flowers that exist in this area, it was tricky to get some quality photos so I will share some useful tips in the end of the article.
We made a day out of it and brought our dog Fia (13 years old) along with us. Being her charming self, patiently waiting while we got our photos, she quickly became quite the attraction for the tourists, wagging her tail and being photographed just like a celebrity.
Approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares (79 acres). Keukenhof is located in South Holland, southwest of Amsterdam. You can find several flower shops and cafes in the park as well as many benches and nice spots for a little picnic.
The Keukenhof doesn’t contain the long fields of tulips many visitors expect. However, there are tulip fields outside the Garden (mostly privately owned). These fields may have restricted access and are not included as part of the Keukenhof ticket.
There are also many art works in the park.
The park is only open from 22 March to 13 May this year, so hurry up if you want to go this year!
Photography tips for crowded places:
- Be patient, you may get a opportunity to get a photo in between all the people.
- Use a big aperture to blur out the background.
- Take photos above people’s heads.
- Go close to your object or stand close to the fence/line so people walk behind you, instead of infront of your lense.

i always get confused with aperture lol. higher f means small apperture right which means bigger depth of field?

Hi Choi, your right about the aperture, however im not sure if the depth of field has anything to do with it. Anyway with a higher aperture you are able to get a more blury background and also you can have a faster shutter speed and capture moving objects in difficult light conditions.

If you go at the end of the day (after 16:00), the lighting is beautiful and there are not as many (touring car) tourists

So glad you were able to capture the beauty of my former employer. I see you found the water feature (I loved that part of the gardens). Something most people don’t know is that artwork inside the park changes each year. Then one or two pieces are selected and purchased for the gardens permenant display.
