Photo walk in Amsterdam – the Amstel canal.

For my second photo walk in Amsterdam I decided to go for a walk along the Amstel canal in the centre of Amsterdam. When I first moved to the city I used to work in this area and enjoyed the views of this very lively part of the city as often as I could.

It was a typical Amsterdam day when it comes to the weather and the photos really reflects that. In about one hour the weather changed constantly between sunny, cloudy, grey and even rainy.

The Amstel Canal is always busy and it is many reasons to like this part of the city. One of my favourite places to get some good and diverse pictures in this area is from the Blauwbrug. The one of a kind bridges on and around the Amstel canal makes for many good photo opportunities, especially when combined with a boat or two passing by.

The sun was hiding behind a thin layer of clouds and created this dramatic light reflection on the Amstel canal.

Old unique townhouses (some of them has been converted into luxury hotels) adorn each side of the canal along with many restaurants and cafes, and houseboats are docked to each side of the canal adding a colorful atmosphere.

If you want you can even try spending a night at the bed and breakfast houseboat in the Amstel canal, that is situated just across the Nationale Opera and Ballet performance art building.

A bed and breakfast on a houseboat in the Amstel canal is an alternative hotel option worth trying out.

That shot looking at the sun is stunning! We’ll be visiting in April – never been there before. It will be a barge and bike tour to see the countryside, too.

In Amsterdam for the first time this past June. Loved it. Great photos, Marit. The changing light conditions really make these shots.

The first picture in three parts – buildings in background distorted by naked trees, massive and heavy lamppost, weird in that vicinity of something light with browns and beige tinge – guard-rail full of twisted parts contrasting with the straight road lines defined by road structure. That’s what attracted my attention. More, it focused my mind from the first view. Colors with shapes. In short – too much objects for one picture. Don’t you think so?
(but smile, I’m in good mood, perhaps I overlooked something?)
    My best regards.
