Photo walk in Amsterdam – The houseboats at Marina Westerdok.

It’s the first weekend in January 2018 and I realized I have not yet shared any photos from Amsterdam.

Amsterdam has been my home base and favourite city for the last 8 years, and what better idea than to share my favourite places to get great photos of the unique sceneries that Amsterdam is known for through a series of photo walk articles throughout the year.

Today I decided to take a walk in Marina Westerdok and take some photos of the houseboats. The mixture of all the old and new buildings in Amsterdam makes it challenging to find the right composition. There are so many things going on in the image, so the goal was to stop and think a bit about the best compositions and focal points, then take photos in slightly different angles to be able to select the best one to edit.

The canal is home to some of the most characteristic houseboats in the city and two oldschool drawbridges connects the marina to the rest of the maze of canals.

The houseboats here are top notch, featuring a variety of colours and one of a kind setups, complete with the obligatory old bikes parked outside. This made a great opportunity for some water reflection photos to showcase the houseboats and the narrow townhouses in this area of Amsterdam.

Since it was biting cold and quite windy there was not many tourists that had ventured out to Marina Westerdok, so at the end of my walk I almost had the place to myself for a few minutes. That is a luxury in this everchanging city with more than 180 different nationalities.

  3. They are beautiful photos. I always wanted to live on a houseboat. You would own only the very necessary and smallest things in life.

  10. So beautiful. There is something about cities that are located on water or are broken up by waterways. It softens them somehow I think and makes the buildings softer and more fluid. Not that I know anything about cities or architecture! 😉 Thanks for sharing your beautiful home. Mel

  11. Your work is absolutely beautiful, and Amsterdam is certainly a majestic city, obviously a photographer’s paradise. I live in Vancouver and can appreciate the benefits of living in a naturally scenic city, although I would imagine anyone with your expertise could find suitable subject matter at whatever locale they found themselves in. Have a great day.

  15. <Great pictures. I like the atmosphere they created. The sky was stunning. However, I wish the colors popped a bit more. I'm not sure if it's because of your filter or time of day, but it might be cool to add some pictures that'd be full of light, showcasing the amazing colorings of the area.
